On April 1, 2026, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published the final Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) for 2026 and 2027. The update includes an expanded list of approved methods that Ohio Lumex and ASTM D03 Gaseous Fuels Committee requested on behalf of the industry.
“We identified four key areas where we felt the EPA did not include generally accepted industry methods, leading to issues with accuracy, availability and increased cost,” said Bennett Rubin, Vice President Gaseous Fuels at Ohio Lumex. “The inclusion of these additional methods reflects a more practical, flexible approach that better supports accurate measurement and efficient compliance.”
Major Gases
Added ASTM D1945, ASTM D1946 and ASTM D7833. Previously, the only specified method was EPA Method 3C.
Hydrocarbons
Added ASTM D1945, ASTM D1946, ASTM D7833 and EPA Method To-15. Previously, the only specified method was EPA Method 18.
Sulfur
Added ASTM D6228 and ASTM D6968. Previously, the only specified method was ASTM D5504.
Moisture
Added ASTM D1142, ASTM D5454 and ASTM D7904. Previously, the only specified method was ASTM D4888.
We thank the EPA for listening to the industry and making these very important updates. The inclusion of these methods aligns the RFS with commonly accepted industry practices and provides greater flexibility in method selection.
These updates are expected to improve data accuracy and reliability while supporting more efficient testing and reduced compliance costs for Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) producers.
