Ohio Lumex has been awarded a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) research grant as part of the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. Research will focus on developing novel concepts for online, real-time monitoring of liquid phase selenium in pulverized coal power plant wastewaters.

The eventual implementation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Steam Power Effluent Limitations Guidelines and Standards (ELGs) will put constraints on allowable selenium concentrations in coal-fired power plant wastewater streams.

“The Ohio Lumex team is extremely excited to begin development of a revolutionary approach to selenium measurement,” said Jonathan Cross, QA/QC Manager & Research Scientist, Ohio Lumex.

The ultimate goal of this 7-month research project is to bring to market new instrumentation for real-time selenium determination.

Anticipated public benefits include:

  • Reliable real-time determination of selenium in wastewaters from coal-fired power plants
  • Reliable speciation of selenium species
  • Clean and healthy watersheds

All research, development, testing, and manufacturing activities will be performed at Ohio Lumex in Solon, Ohio and carried out by Ohio Lumex personnel.
