Simple Gas Measurements Using Sorbent Traps

sorbent trap application diagram

Ohio Lumex sorbent traps make it easy to measure even the toughest gases, such as Hg, HCl, HBr, Se, As, SO3 and NH3. The diagram above shows key places for measurement across the entire process.

Mercury (Hg) Sorbent Traps

  • Measure natural Hg speciation prior to SCR
  • Measure Hg oxidation across the SCR
  • Measure elemental and oxidized Hg going into the FGD to determine Hg reemission
  • 30B traps measure total Hg going into the FGD
  • Measure Hg speciation at the stack to determine the cause of elevated Hg emissions
    • 30B traps measure Hg for RATAs
    • PS12B and 30B LEE traps measure Hg for MATS compliance
Where to use mercury traps

Hydrogen Chloride (HCI)/Hydrogen Bromide (HBr) Sorbent Traps

  • Measure native halogen levels in the gas phase or those resulting from halogen additives before the APH
  • Measure native halogen levels in the gas phase or those resulting from halogen additives and compare to APH inlet levels to estimate corrosion
  • Measure halogen levels at the FGD inlet
  • Measure HCl/HBr at the stack for compliance or process engineering

Selenium (Se) and Arsenic (As) Sorbent Traps

  • Measure As which contributes to catalyst poisoning before the SCR and/or APH
  • Measure Se/As which affects ELG compliance before the SCR and/or APH
  • Measure gas phase Se/As entering the FGD and impacting ELG
Where to use selenium and arsenic traps

Sulfur Trioxide (SO3) and Sulfuric Mist Sorbent Traps

  • Measure SO3 generated by the combustion process before the SCR
  • Measure SO2 to SO3 conversion across the SCR
  • Measure SO3 levels that cause corrosion and contribute to elevated Hg emissions before the FGD
  • Measure SO3 for blue plume at the stack
Where to use SO3 and sulfuric mist traps

Ammonia (NH3) Sorbent Traps

  • Measure ammonia slip through the SCR
  • Measure ammonia entering the FGD, contributing to the reduction of oxidized Hg
  • Measure ammonia at the stack for compliance or process engineering
Where to use NH3 traps
